About the Course

This course explores the impact of the Shinkansen, which played a significant role in Japan’s rise to become one of the strongest economy in the world. The Shinkansen transformed not only lifestyles and business practices but also became the preferred mode of transportation for domestic travel—contributing to greenhouse gas emission reductions, and contrasting with the prevalent use of cars and airplanes in many European countries.

It examines and explains the Quality of Life methodology as an integrated approach to help estimate the mutually beneficial effects that the Shinkansen brings to industries and quality of life . This method considers the increase in product distribution as income, and how the resulting lifestyle changes generate new demands for industries. By analyzing the interconnected relationships, we can gain insight into the impact of the Shinkansen on various aspects of society.
