Financial Inclusion in Asia and the Pacific
About the Program
This program will explore the challenges and opportunities related to the advancement of financial inclusion, financial literacy, and financial education as drivers of sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific, with a focus on the role of financial technologies, or fintech, and their policy implications.
It will consist of four core components:
I. Three compulsory ADBI E-Learning courses
Financial Inclusion, Financial Literacy, and Financial Education in Asia
- Instructor: Peter Morgan, Asian Development Bank Institute
- 5 video lessons; 47 minutes total duration
- Completion deadline: 17 August 2020
Financial Inclusion: Evolution and Contemporary Challenges
- Instructor: Robin Newnham, Alliance for Financial Inclusion
- 5 video lessons; 1 hour, 4 minutes total duration
- Completion deadline: 24 August 2020
Advancing the Digital Economy for Sustainable Growth in Asia
- Instructor: Bihong Huang, Asian Development Bank
- 3 video lessons; 44 minutes total duration
- Completion deadline: 31 August 2020
II. Two additional self-selected ADBI E-Learning courses

III. Webinar for group instruction and discussion
- Date and time: 14–15 September 2020, 14:00-16:00 (Tokyo Time)
IV. Final term paper
- Length: minimum 2,500 words
- Paper submission deadline: 30 September 2020

Targeted Participants
The program is designed for government officials from Asian Development Bank Developing Member Countries invited by ADBI or welcomed by prior arrangement with ADBI.
Learning Objectives
- Examine the development of financial inclusion in Asia and the Pacific, its socioeconomic effects, and onward growth potential
- Highlight strategies for tackling barriers to greater financial inclusion, financial literacy, and financial education, and associated risks
- Identify the pillars of an effective financial inclusion policy framework, drawing upon country-level examples
- Assess the region’s e-commerce and fintech development and related policy imperatives

- Complete two self-selected ADBI E-Learning courses via the list of “available courses” link by the corresponding course completion deadline
- Upon completing each self-selected ADBI E-Learning course, you will be asked to complete an evaluation form—simply type “Completed” in each field on the form
- Join webinar for classroom-style group instruction and discussion
- Complete final term paper (further details provided in program syllabus)
